ABOUT ULRASOUND SCANS FOR DOGS

Ultrasound is usually performed around 25-35 days after mating, as it becomes easier to detect foetal structures at this stage. The procedure is similar to ultrasound scans used for pregnant humans and provides valuable information about the developing puppies. The main purpose of the ultrasound is to confirm pregnancy, estimate the number of puppies, and assess their development.

NON-INVASIVE PROCEDURE

Ultrasound does not involve any radiation and is safe for the pregnant dog and the developing puppies. It is a non-invasive imaging technique that uses high-frequency sound waves to create images of the internal structures of the dog’s abdomen. We use a water-based gel that is safe to use on the abdomen and our equipment is sterilised after each use to avoid cross-contamination and the spread of infection.

IS ULTRASOUND SAFE FOR DOGS

Jenna at Fen High Kennels K9 Fertility Clinic in Cambridge has many years’ experience owning, breeding and showing a range of breeds and is a competent dog handler, your dog is in safe hands! The ultrasound scans can be carried out while your dog is standing or lying down, whichever is more comfortable for them.

THE LAW ON MICROCHIPPING DOGS

In 2016 microchipping laws in England Wales and Scotland were updated to ensure all dogs and puppies over the age of 8 weeks old are microchipped. The only exception for this is if a registered vet believes the dog should not be microchipped for health reasons. Owners that do not have their dog microchipped and registered to an approved database face a fine of up to £500.

TRAINED MICROCHIP IMPLANTERS

It is a dog breeder’s responsibility to ensure puppies are microchipped before selling them. Puppies cannot be sold until they’re eight weeks old, and they must be microchipped before you can buy them. Brentwood K9 Fertility Clinic are trained microchip implanters. Fen High Kennels K9 Fertility  use SmartTrace and PetScanner microchips and our services are available for all litters sizes and individual puppies.

ANIMAL TRACKER MICROCHIP REGISTRATION

SmartTrace and PetScanner are two of the of the largest microchip providers in the UK. Both are fully compliant with current Government legislation (DEFRA), relating to registration and record keeping for dogs and operate a 24 hour helpline for lost and found pets which is manned 365 days a year.
