Cambridge based Fen High Kennels offer a range of fertility services for dogs in Cambridge. This includes cytology and progesterone testing for ovulation, reverse progesterone testing for parturition and semen analysis with chilling and shipping available. We can also assist with all aspects of natural mating and dog breeding. Our aim is to assist dog owners and dog breeders to achieve success with their breeding programs. Owner, Jenna Smith, uses state of the art equipment and is a Kennel Club Assured Breeder with over 20 years’ experience, fully insured and 5-star licensed with South Cambs Council.

Mistimed matings cause unnecessary stress to dogs and their owners. Responsible breeders prioritise the well-being of the dogs which is why careful planning and consideration are essential. Ovulation and semen analysis can determine the optimum window to ensure a successful conception. As well as these tests, Jenna can assist and advise with all aspects of natural mating practices and dog breeding.

CYTOLOGY AND PROGESTERONE TESTING FOR OVULATION

Cytology is a simple procedure, we use a swab to gather samples and examine them under a microscope to assess changes in cell types and structures, which indicate the stage of the cycle and the timing of ovulation. Progesterone testing is done using a blood sample (provided by client) Progesterone levels can indicate ovulation, parturition and some cyclical problems. Progesterone testing is a straightforward test and the results are available during your appointment.

THE BENEFITS OF OVULATION TESTING

Many breeding attempts fail simply due to mistimed breeding. This causes unnecessary stress to the dog and her owner and can be avoided with some careful planning. Alongside semen analysis, cytology or progesterone ovulation testing can greatly improve results. Other benefits include:

REVERSE PROGESTERONE TESTING FOR PARTURITION

Progesterone levels fall at the end of a pregnancy to trigger whelping. If there is uncertainty as to whether a bitch is in labour and whelping is due or where there is doubt on timing of a C-Section reverse progesterone testing is a valuable test as the progesterone falls to a certain level around the time puppies are ready to be born.

SEMEN ANALYSIS, CHILLING AND SHIPPING

Semen analysis is used to determine the reproductive potential of a male dog and identify any issues that may affect his fertility. We examine a sample under a microscope and the main considerations are volume, morphology and motility. Chilling and shipping allows breeders to overcome geographical distances and breed dogs that are not physically located in the same area. We can also work with shipped samples at the clinic.
